Meet the National Recreation Trail

In 2012, U.S. Secretary of the Interior, Ken Salazar, announced that the 21-mile Willimantic River Water Trail was designated a National Recreation Trail (NRT). The Alliance applied for this national recognition in cooperation with The Last Green Valley (TLGV). Stewardship plans include improvements at the nine launch sites owned by four riverside towns and by Ct. DEEP. Kiosks for the sites are funded by a Ct. DEEP Recreation Trails grant awarded to The Last Green Valley.

The Willimantic River Water Trail includes these public launch sites: the Commuter Lot in Stafford, Nye-Holman State Forest (Ct. DEEP) and Heron Cove Park in Tolland, Merrow Meadow Park and River Park in Mansfield, Eagleville Dam (Ct. DEEP) with three launches in Coventry/Mansfield, and a Ct. DEEP Roadside Park in Columbia. A river-access-only rest stop in Willington is at Peck's Mill.
